Week 2 Update

Hi Everyone

Hope Bush Week went well for you and it was lovely to see some of you at Champagne Breakfast. Just a little “save the date” kind of thing, but Queer Ball will be on the evening of the 24th of August.

Queer Coffee

Street Theatre Cafe – 11am Tuesday
Come and enjoy a coffee/tea/hot chocolate/whatever with people from the Department. Also we might move from Street Theatre next week, so come and we can debate about which cafe is the best. I’ll be easy to spot in my usually ridiculous lime green top hat.

Queery
Queer Space – 5pm Friday
Come enjoy a discussion of an as-of-yet undecided topic, although the discussion is happening on the facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/groups/15273113985/). There’ll be cheese and other delicious snacks and then, if people are interested, we’ll probably head out for dinner afterwards.

Diversity ACT Gala
Hellenic Club Philip – 7pm Friday 31st August
I’ve booked a table for the Department (well doing it tonight or tomorrow) of 10 and there’s already some seats gone, so get in quickly. The Department will subsidise it to be $15 each, so email me ASAP if you want a ticket and then get the money to me.

Cheers,
Stuart

Bush Week (Week 1) Update

Hi Everyone
Hope you’re all doing well! This week is Bush Week, so there’s lots going on on campus and classes start back, so it’s a busy week! Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to cancel the showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show on Saturday night, but we’ll screen it later in semester, so there’ll be plenty of warning. I apologise for this email being late as well, but I hope that doesn’t impact on you too much.

Champagne Breakfast
Copland Courtyard – 10am Tuesday
The Champagne Breakfast is a tradition in the Department and there’ll be plenty of food and drink for all involved and some champagne if you want it. I’ll be there in my lime-green top hat.
If anyone is able to help me bring stuff up from the Queer Space at 9:45, that’d be much appreciated and help cooking during the breakfast. We should be all packed up by about 12:30 I’m anticipating.

Queer Department AGM
Queer Space – 5pm Friday
The Queer Department AGM has been nominated as being this meeting, so it’d be great to see lots of people there and then go out for dinner afterwards if people are up for that. Things to be discussed include the Department Handbook, meeting times, Pride Week and what else we’re going to be doing this semester. I’ll send around the Agenda probably tomorrow.

Condom Packing
Westlund House – 10am to 3pm Saturday
The AIDS Action Council are having a condom packing day this Saturday and it’d great if we could get some volunteers from the Department, as the AAC are a great help for us and it’d be really great if we could help them out. Any time at all is appreciated really as unfortunately I can’t attend at all. There will be snacks and drinks as well. If you’d like more information, please contact Nick Nguyen on 02 6257 2855 or email him at nick.nguyen@aidsaction.org.au

Housekeeping
My Officer Hour for this semester will be 11am-12pm on Wednesday in the Queer Space, so I’ll be available then for any concerns you may have and to borrow from the Library. Kira’s librarian hour should be announced soon, so I’ll email that to everyone hopefully when I have the agenda for the next meeting prepared. If you want to unsubscribe from this mailing list, reply with “unsubscribe”. If you’re wondering where the Queer Space is, reply with “space”.

Week 13 Update

Hi everyone!
Week 13 already guys! Congratulations for making it this far! Hope you are all not too stressed yet! This is another quiet week for the department.

Queer Collaborations
Applications NEED to be in by the 1st of June (aka THIS FRIDAY), so those forms need to be sent in soon. The registration and equity access forms can be found at qc2012.org. If you’re having trouble with paying the registration fee by the 1st, email Brodie on queer.officer@flinders.edu.au and you should hopefully be able to sort something out. It’d be great if you could tell us when you’d sent those forms in as well. The collective isn’t organising transport for people, so if you’re flying, I’d suggest booking it sooner rather than later, if you need some help working out options send us a message. We’re still waiting to hear back about SEEF, but there has been money allocated in our budget for subsidies, so we’ll get that money out as soon as we know about SEEF and people have sent me receipts for their payment. Please note that the subsidies are capped for the first 10 people who apply from the collective so complete your application promptly. Also note there is a statutory declaration and you do need someone of one of the professions in the link (http://www.ag.gov.au/Statutorydeclarations/Pages/Statutorydeclarationsignatorylist.aspx) to sign it off for you.

Queer Coffee
10am Monday – Street Theatre Cafe
Just the usual Monday morning coffee at the Street Theatre. Come along, bring a friend and join us! :)   http://www.facebook.com/events/240306052745256/

Housekeeping
Stuart will not be able to do his office hours this week BUT if you need to talk to either him or I just send us a email and we can organize it!  As always, you can borrow from the Queer Department library and hard drive during the librarian hour (11:30-12:30 on Thursday) or whenever any one of Stuart, Kira (the librarian) or I are in the Queer Space.

You can unsubscribe to this mailing list by responding “unsubscribe” or find out where the Queer Space is by responding “space” and request access by responding “access”.

See you all next semester, with many more exciting events to come!!

Sorry have no amusing comic to post, distracted by Eurovision goodness!

Week 12 Update

Hi everyone!
Hope you’re not too snowed in under all your work, considering we’re getting pretty close to exams and all that. Turns out that it’s a busy week in the Department as well and we’d love to see you at some of our events!

Queer Collaborations
It’s getting close to when applications have to be in, which is the 1st of June, so those forms need to be sent in soon. I’ve attached the registration form and the equity grant form. If you’re having trouble with paying the registration fee by the 1st, email Brodie on queer.officer@flinders.edu.au and you should hopefully be able to sort something out. It’d be great if you could tell me when you’d sent those forms in as well. The collective isn’t organising transport for people, so if you’re flying, I’d suggest booking it sooner rather than later. Also note there is a statutory declaration and you do need someone of one of the professions in the link (http://www.ag.gov.au/Statutorydeclarations/Pages/Statutorydeclarationsignatorylist.aspx) to sign it off for you.

Queery – Queerness and Religion
5 pm Friday – Queer Space
It’s Queery time at last! Friday the 25th of May from 5pm we’ll be talking about the relationship between sexuality, gender identity and religion in the Queer Space, eating the choicest of cheeses and biscuits, drinking the $5-a-bottle-est of wines, and winding down a little before exam fever hits.
See more at http://www.facebook.com/events/348290208558581/

Queer Collective Meeting
5pm Thursday – Queer Space
Agenda is attached. This week we’ll be discussing Pride Week, reflecting on how the semester has gone in the Department and what we’re going to do next semester. As always, if there’s anything you’d like to discuss, email me and I’ll put it on the agenda or bring it up at the meeting.

ANUSA Ordinary General Meeting 1
12pm Wednesday – Union Court
Please please please please come! There’s a rather important motion regarding how Queer Officer is elected, which we passed a motion on a couple of weeks ago which will be passed into the ANUSA constitution if it passes, so we need at least a few people from the Queer Department to come and vote for it and if need be, speak for it.

Queer Coffee
10am Monday – Street Theatre Cafe
Just the usual Monday morning coffee at the Street Theatre. Come along, bring a friend, wear a ridiculous hat and join us! :)

ANUDisabilities calling for volunteers for Universal Spoon Hour
Our friends over at the Disabilities Collective are looking for some people to help out with promoting their first event, Universal Spoon Hour, which is from 12-2pm on Thursday the 31st of May. If you’re interested in helping with the preparation, please email sa.disabilites@anu.edu.au and tell them. They’d be super duper special happy if you did and you’d get that wonderful warm feeling of helping people out.

Reflect. Inspire. – International AIDS Candlelight Memory Ceremony
6.00 pm Sunday 20 May 2012 – National Gallery of Australia
The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial honours the memory of all people affected by HIV and reignites community activism in the response to HIV. With 33 million people living with HIV today, the IACM serves as an important intervention for global solidarity, breaking down barriers of stigma and discrimination, and giving hope to new generations. You are invited to honour the memories of those we have lost and those who have fought so hard for the rights and wellbeing of people affected by HIV at the 29th International Candlelight Memorial with the official launch of the fundraising effort for the Canberra Permanent AIDS Memorial project.

Housekeeping
There’s juice (by that I mean “fruit drink”) in the Queer Space fridge which you should totally drink because it’s super delicious and needs to be drank soon. If there’s any kind of staple food you think we should have in the Queer Space like bread or milk that we don’t have, feel free to email me and I’ll stock us up on it.

As always, you can borrow from the Queer Department library and hard drive during the officer hour (12:30-1:30 on Monday), the librarian hour (11:30-12:30 on Thursday) or whenever any one of Nat, Kira (the librarian) or myself are in the Queer Space. You can unsubscribe to this mailing list by responding “unsubscribe” or find out where the Queer Space is by responding “space” and request access by responding “access”.

If you’ve read all of this, you are a super special awesome person and I think you’re wonderful. :D
And just for you, http://buttersafe.com/2012/04/19/giving-a-presentation/
Useful for the next oral presentation you have to do. :P

Week 11 Update

Hi everyone!

Hope you’re all doing well.
Movie Night
5 pm for a 5:30 start Friday – Queer Space (but I’ll have another room booked just in case we get too cramped.)
Finally time for another movie night! There’ll be pizza (including vegetarian and gluten free ones)! There’ll be movies! As we have a portable hard drive now and a media centre for our TV, we can put movies onto that and watch them on our TV, so feel free to bring along your favourite LGBTIQ movie during my officer hour or another time when Nat or I are in the Space and we’ll put it on the hard drive for you and then we can watch it at our movie night. In true collectivist fashion, we’ll probably have a selection of movies to watch from and take a vote about who wants to watch what. Hopefully see you there! :D I’m sorry about bringing it a week forward, but that seemed to be what worked best within the Collective calendar.
International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia
All day – Thursday
This Thursday is International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, although the Department is not officially doing anything I’d just like to remind people of it and that’s it’s a good time to reflect on the diversity within the Queer community and criticise homophobia and transphobia in the wider community and even within the Queer community. The official website is http://www.homophobiaday.org/ and it’s well worth a look around purely out of interest.
Queer Coffee
10 am Monday – Street Theatre
Come along and enjoy a coffee with some people from the Department. It’s a nice way to meet some new people.
Queer Collaborations
If anyone is interested in going and hasn’t emailed me about their interest, please do ASAP. We need to have at least some idea of how many people are interested before we can announce how much we are subsidising people. Registration is due by the 1st of June, however if need be, you can pay after that, but the organisers would prefer if you paid before then. Cost of registration + accommodation + food is $350, but travel is on top of that. For more information, see http://qc2012.org/ or you can email the organisers at queer.officer@flinders.edu.au .

Housekeeping
As always, you can borrow from the Queer Department library and hard drive during the officer hour (12:30-1:30 on Monday), the librarian hour (11:30-12:30 on Thursday) or whenever any one of Nat, Kira (the librarian) or myself are in the Queer Space. Week 10 Update

Hi Everyone,
Hope you’re all doing well and not too stressed about assessments and everything. :) Unfortunately I’m unable to make my Officer hour again this week, so if you want to see me about anything, please contact me on this email and we can make a time, however Nat will be in the Queer Space substituting for me during the time between 12:30 and 1:30 on Monday, so you can see her instead. There’s also an SRC on this Wednesday and an OGM (which we need people from the Collective to attend due to our electoral reforms being in there and we want them to pass) on Wednesday the 23rd of May.

Collective Meeting
5pm Thursday – Queer Space
This week is a Collective meeting week and it’d be great to see lots of you there. This week, we’ll be discussing our mental health campaign and Pride Week. If you have any motions or things you’d like to discuss, email me and I’ll attach them to the agenda for the meeting.

Queer Lunch
12pm-2pm everyday – Queer Space
Very informally, quite a few people have lunch in the Space at around this time. There’s a microwave and tea and coffee in the space. If there’s something you feel that we should have in the space (e.g. more bread or something like that), feel free to drop me a line or tell me in person and I’ll see what I can do about it.

Queer Coffee
10am Monday – Street Theatre Cafe
Just the usual Monday morning coffee, Nat will be wearing the hat this time as I won’t be there again.

Marriage Equality Rally
1pm Saturday – Petrie Plaza
There is a rally for equal marriage across Australia this Saturday and it’d be great if we could get some people from the collective there to show our support for the cause. Saturday afternoon coffee afterwards is quite likely as well, so come for the rally and then stay afterwards and have a chat.

Housekeeping
Currently there’s a poll on the department page regarding future social events and Nat and I are looking at the results, so there’s another movie night currently planned for the 23rd of May, so keep your eye out for that. If anyone has any particularly exciting suggestions for movies, feel free to contact me about it. As always, you can borrow from the Queer Department library during the officer hour (12:30-1:30 on Monday), the librarian hour (11:30-12:30 on Thursday) or whenever any one of Nat, Kira (the librarian) or myself are in the Queer Space. You can unsubscribe to this mailing list by responding “unsubscribe” or find out where the Queer Space is by responding “space”.

Cheers,
Stuart

Week 9 Update

Hi Everyone,
I hope everyone is settling back into uni. Unfortunately I will not be at my officer hour this week and Nat, the deputy officer will be replacing me between 12:30 and 1:30 on Monday in the Queer Space and I’ll also be away the week after.

We’re still taking expressions of interest for Queer Collaborations, so even if you’re vaguely interested in the prospect of a week in Adelaide with a bunch of Queer people, express your interest!

Queer Coffee is on at 10am at Street Theatre this week. I think Nat will have the hat this week, so you’ll be able to find us. Generally inside if the weather is bad and outside if the weather is nice.

Ally training is running at 9:30 on this Friday at 9.30am-12.30pm at Lena Karmel Lodge. Get in contact with Lucia Lee on diversitylc@anu.edu.au to RSVP, because it’s really important to have a presence there to ensure the continuation of this important program.

Cheers,
Stuart
